Students will learn how to create a closed coiled rim treatment on a gourd. Skills include how to begin coiling, adding additional thread, making a switch-back and circular designs, adding beads and ending the coiling. Each student will be encouraged to create original designs using this coiling technique. Students may not complete the project in class but will be provided the information and demonstration how to finish the project. A instructional handout will be provided with information on gourd preparation, the coiling process, and how to end the coiling.
The Instructor will provide the following:
Gourd-drilled, painted interior, and stained exterior, ready for coiling
1 spool (approximately 100 yards) 4 ply waxed linen thread, a color of your choice
10 yards 4/32" fiber rush
#20 tapestry needle
Beads with 1/16"hole (1/4 to 1/2 inch in size)
Instructional handout
Students should bring:
Basketry shears or heavy duty kitchen type scissors
Small sewing scissors
Students may save by bringing their own following supplies: (savings up to $24.50)
$10.00-Gourd-drilled, finished interior and exterior, ready to begin coiling. Gourd should be 5-6 inches in diameter. Cut the gourd with a 3 1/2 to 4 inch diameter hole in the top and cut a dip in the front. See project photo. Holes need to be approximately 1/2 inch apart and 1/4 inch below the rim of the gourd. Use a 1/16 inch drill bit to drill the holes.
